Macroscopic Evidence of Thermally Activated Friction with Polytetrafluoroethylene

چکیده
Under macroscopic pin-on-disk testing the sliding friction coefficient of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was investigated over a temperature range of approximately 200–400 K. This study examines the nature of the temperature dependence by testing PTFE pins at varying temperature and humidity on a linear reciprocating pin-on-disk tribometer. The friction coefficient increased monotonically with decreasing temperature from l = 0.075to l = 0.210 in a manner consistent with thermal activation; it deviated from this trend only during phase and glass transitions in the PTFE and temperatures below the frost-points for the respective environments.

Nano- and Macroscale Evidence of Thermally Activated Friction
The recent availability of very low wear materials that undergo primarily interfacial sliding has enabled studies that more directly probe the fundamental aspects of friction. This paper reports on variable temperature experiments that were conducted with common polymeric and lamellar solid lubricant materials. Friction coefficient consistently increased with decreased temperature well into the...

We generalize a model for friction at a sliding interface involving the motion of misfit dislocations to include the effect of thermally activated transitions across barriers. We obtain a comparatively simple form with the absolute zero-temperature Peierls barrier replaced by an effective Peierls barrier which varies exponentially with temperature, in agreement with recent experimental observat...

We demonstrate measurement and control of nanoscale single-asperity friction by using cantilever probes featuring an in situ solid-state heater in contact with silicon oxide substrates. The heater temperature was varied between 25 and 790 °C. By using a low thermal conductivity sample, silicon oxide, we are able to vary tip temperatures over a broad range from 25 ± 2 to 255 ± 25 °C. In ambient ...
متن کاملThe effect of activated flux type on the weld profile and angular distortion of A-TIG welding of the AISI 2205 duplex stainless steel
In this investigation, the AISI 2205 duplex stainless steel was welded in the form of bead on plate by A-TIG process with different amount of the ZrO2 and TiO2 activated fluxes. The results of the visual inspection showed that the specimen with 50% ZrO2 and 50% TiO2 activated flux, had the lowest face width and the specimen with contains 90% ZrO2 activated flux, had the highest penetration dept...
